It can last an entire round to protect against weaker attacks, or completely negate (rather than half) a large attack. Mage armor gives you a permanent +1 AC over studded leather.
The big benefit of arcane trickster imo is familiars and big control spells. They do get outclassed by blade singer very hard though in terms of gishyness, and by pure casters in terms of control and nova. A great start would be variant human or custom lineage with the mobile feat and use booming blade.
