Also when cold it keeps the vanes more closed in an effort to warm up the engine by making it work harder. Smoke means your either getting to much fuel or not enough air. So with that being said I would start easy and see if you have a boost leak. Be sure you hot a clean air filter, and fuel filter. After that if you don't find anything I would move to the injection area. Maybe have you injectors checked.

This noise had started earlier but now it's more often, I don't think it is the Turbo. My gas mileage has also dropped about 2 ... Same for your fuel filter. If your filter isn't letting enough fuel pass through, your engine isn't going to accelerate the way you need. Trouble starting your engine is another indicator that your fuel filter is clogged. If you've got a full tank of diesel and your engine won't start, there's a good chance your filter may need changing.

Once each day for about 5 minutes while running at interstate speeds I had a power loss with excessive black smoke. Each time it lasted about 5 minutes and then was back to full power with no indications ever of any problems.

It will set the world on fire from 1st-4th but as soon as it hit 5th it falls on its face.
