My wildlings seem to do very well in sieges. Spear, axe, plus javelin sniping, and a very big shield with better body armor then even the trained spearman, and to top it off quick movement speed. Sturgian veteran warriors are probably pretty good. t5 crossbowmen are great at sniping enemy archers.
Shock troops devastate shielded troops. It's by design and it's their only niche where they excel. Fians are the best. Don’t upgrade to veteran falx. Stop at tier 4. Tier 5 they switch from falx to romphalia which sucks. Stay at tier 4 tho and they are one of, if not THE best infantry unit in the game. Line em up shieldwall style in front of fians in loose formation on a hilltop and go make yourself a sammich.

All other horses increase your carry capacity by 20, but also increase your party speed as your infantry can ride horses on campaign map. As far as I know, speed of the horses is irrelevant.

In my experience a large number of high quality archers are the absolute best defense you can have, yeah. If he was running and infantry ball with like 50/50 shields to line breakers I could see it. they have a nuts DMG output.
