Problem is, the 39-A Mountie did not come out until 1953 with a letter "K" prefix and a 24 inch barrel which was later changed to a 20 inch barrel.

You are correct, the Model 39A with a serial number beginning with 27 was made in 1973, and is safe to use the modern, high speed ammunition. The big hub-bub on the Model 39 and high speed ammunition is for guns in .22 caliber made prior to 1932. This would include any of the lever action models and pump action guns made prior to that date.

I have a 1957 39A with the letter "P" (early 1957) in the serial number, plainly struck and not a partial "R" (late 1957). I don't see it on your list but did find it over at the Marlin Firearms Collector Association site. On their list compared to yours between 1957 and 1964 there are several lettered differences as noted.Marlin simply used the first two digits of the serial number to indicate the year the gun was made, and in your case, 68 = 1968.
