Examples of vernacular regions include the bible belt, silicon valley, and the midwest. These regions are not formal or have clearly set political boundaries.A formal region may include a city, county, state, country, or even a geographic region. Such regions are clearly defined by set boundaries, and are regarded as common or public knowledge. A formal region is created on the basis of at least one or more of the following characteristics: Common language. Religion. Nationality.
