Jan 7, 2013 · I got an email back from Marlin about my 336 manufacturing date. The guy said there is no chart he could send me but he did say the serial number: MR22xxxC signifies a manufacture date in 2012. No other information was given. My guess is that it was manufactured in February 2012.
I have a 1957 39A with the letter "P" (early 1957) in the serial number, plainly struck and not a partial "R" (late 1957). I don't see it on your list but did find it over at the Marlin Firearms Collector Association site. On their list compared to yours between 1957 and 1964 there are several lettered differences as noted.Firearm serial numbers were date coded by a prefix within the s/n, as signified below. For example a Marlin model 39A with a serial number of N1255X would have been made in 1955 while a 1894 in 44 magnum with a serial number of 2510509X, would have equated to 1975. The white line spacer started in 1951. Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel. The Ballard barrels have 6 lands and grooves.

It is a Model 39 made from 1922-38, case color receiver, 24” octagon barrel, first variation. If you read the gun the information is right there on it upper tang behind hammer “Model 39”.
