The major limiting factor on their usage is angle of descent - the steeper the incline, the faster you move. If it isn't steep, expect a leisurely pace.

Yeah it is very safe base and the tadpoles that swarm under it provide plenty of food. It isn't shown in the video, but I built up and then out to get to the top of the lantern and built ziplines there as well. I have all my chests clustered together as well, so no matter what I am crafting; I have complete access to my inventory.Zip lines are perfect there.
