Get a 500 with a rifled barrel (or a combo). If your main use-case is deer, you want that rifled barrel for sabot slugs, and the Nova slug barrels are outrageously priced from what I've seen. Mossberg has a smooth enough action, but you can feel the parts moving its more clunky, but it feels like it could take more punishment. Jun 14, 2012 · I got a factory camo'ed Benelli SuperNova for a touch over $400 that probably hand't been shot more then a handful of shells. It really is a nicely made firearm and more refined compared to the serviceable but more crude Mossberg. I use a Mossberg Maverick 88 myself, basically same as the 500, except for the trigger assembly, and trigger guard mounted safety, All aftermarket parts interchange, and mine has the 20" barrel and 8 shot capacity. I personally have a Mossberg 500. The Mossy's are good guns, have always been reliable, and didn't cost me a pile of money. The Benelli is a GREAT gun, and cost me about what I paid for both the Mossy's combined. If your budget is small, go with the Mossy's, they'll do the job reliably.
